EVAN SKREDERSTU

FRAGMENTS IN NATURE

I would consider this piece of a continuation of Adapt and Improvise, a larger piece created by Jose Lopez and myself in 2011 for the Pasadena Museum of Art. There is an obvious difference in our styles and approach to painting, this is what makes it interesting for me to collaborate with Jose. It's rare that we're able to work on a piece together so when it does happen it gives me a chance to carve my piece out of an abstract setting. The perched chameleon we see in the bottom right is carefully analyzing the new environment and deciding whether to go in further. His colors are the actual colors of a veiled chameleon. With a few small exceptions every color on his body is present in the environment around him.

ABSTRACTION AND NUMBERS

"This piece developed as I went along, playing with layers, color and composition."

Skrederstu makes abstraction pulsate with energy in time and space. That includes numbers, perhaps the most useful abstraction devised by humankind.

BACK TO THE FUTURE PT.1

"This piece shows the 2.5 year old me adding on to a black and white mural of my grandmother."

Time travel is another theme that Skrederstu continues to explore in his series of paintings about the painting process.

PAINTING IN PRIVATE

"This is an in-progress behind-the-scenes insight into how I work."

This work demonstrates Skrederstu's photo–realism chops and offbeat perspective. He might not call it prana but evidently his painting is as natural and essential to him as breathing.
